WRX Concept Shows Big Changes for 2015 Model
By Ryan Douthit, Subiesport

What you’re looking at here is a Concept version of what could be the next WRX. Not an Impreza WRX, because the car you see here, and going forward, has even less in common with the Impreza than the 2012 model did – though, yes, if you dig down to the basic unibody it is still built on the same core chassis.

If you wanted proof of just how serious Subaru is about performance with this next WRX just look at the roof: It’s carbon fiber to keep the center of gravity as low as possible. Overall the car is lower, sleeker and wider than even the outgoing widebody model. Like all previous WRX’s this new model will feature a turbo-charged boxer engine with a top-mount intercooler. Performance specs aren’t yet known, but our guess will be 280-320hp for the WRX (not the STI). But keep in mind, that’s only a guess based on rumors.

Image

The colors should seem familiar. A base coat of “World Rally Blue Pearl III” along with trendy fluorescent yellow trim, as a nod to the WRX’s World Rally Championship heritage.

The concept also features BBS “RD-D” one-piece forged wheels wrapped in 245/40R20 Dunlop tires with an “exclusive tread pattern” and more of that fluorescent yellow. (You’d almost think Ken Block was still onboard with the Subaru Rally Team given his penchant for neon.)

Looking at what numbers we do have, it is clear this WRX is intent on blazing a new performance trail. The new car loses two-inches of its length (178-inches), is almost four inches wider (74.4-inches), and – get this – the new car drops four inches of stature to 54.7 when compared to the 2012/2013 model. Finally, the wheelbase extends a massive five inches to 108.7. (The 2012 WRX 4-door sedan measured 180.3-inches in length, 70.70-inches in width, 58.1-inches in height with a 103.3-inch wheelbase.)

The video is kind of cool, but the part where the engine blows-the-fuck-up is conspicuously absent.

The real life version looks better, but it's still very Meh to me.

I like the look of it quite a bit.

If they can just tune the car to where it will run safely out of the box and fix all the problems from the 3rd gen, then it will be a winner.

I assume this one will come with the new F20 engine that is direct injected, low mount turbo, TMIC, timing chain. To me, that should fix most of the reliability issues of the current EJ series. Of course, since it is a new engine, it also creates opportunities for new reliability issues.

The new Forester XT will have the F20 DIT engine, so maybe the XT drivers (i.e., Beta testers) will take one for the team so Subaru can get their shit together on whatever inevitable problems the new platform will have.

Agreed on the new motor. Looking at the 335i, if Subaru dealership e's it right the power potential will be enormous with DI and boost and a bit of tuning. But considering what they've done thus far, sadly I'm not holding my breath.

I hope it's the fabled 3.6L H6 turbo we've all been hoping for... Something to get the Mustang and Camaro boys to shut up and take notice. Not likely, but it would be cool.

Not close to the concept, really.

Looks like hammered dog shit. Just an Impreza with wide fenders, just like before, just like they said they wouldn't do.

I really think they just put the new turbo engine in the current Impreza body and threw a wing and scoop on it.

Yeah, I don't think it is a mule either, which sucks. The side gills are there, the rear diffuser is there, new wheels. I do think this is a pre-production prototype, but I think this is close to what the public will get. The concept was for show, pun intended.

I have never understood the point of concepts on existing models that are due for a refresh. This isn't the 50s anymore. We have the internet. We have photoshop. We do not lack imagination. The only thing they do is shoot themselves in the foot by setting the bar sky high and then plowing those uprights over with the eventual watered down production model rolling out with a collective WTF?

Sadly, they can probably make-up for it by simply turbocharging the BRZ.

Agreed. That'd be soooo much better than either the concept or the test mule.

As someone who likes the new body style Impreza, it would be fine with me.

Isn't that what every WRX/STi has been up to this point? I'd look it up on Wikipedia, but I'm feeling lazy.

Yeah, the WRX/STi has been based on the Impreza up until now. The problem I have I guess is that SOA said the new WRX/STi wouldn't be an Impreza with a wing on it and that it would be a separate platform. This is not the case here, at least it doesn't look like it.

If they had said from the beginning that it would be an Impreza with a better drivetrain and suspension, like all the previous incarnations, I guess I wouldn't be disappointed. *shrug*

I prefer the '12+ Impreza to the '08-'11 Impreza.

Agreed.

I realize these are just spy pics. But I really don't like the look of this upcoming model. The front end just doesn't look right with the rest of the body lines running down the car. Car doesn't appear to be wide enough either, looks way to narrow. I would be much happier with a used '12-13 STi honestly.

Definitely. There is a Deep Cherry Pearl Impreza sedan running around Crossville and that thing is gorgeous when the sun hits it just right.
